Widely regarded a one of South Africa's leading classical concert pianists, Christopher Duigan has always enjoyed a wide ranging and eclectic taste in music. Exploring something of a multitude of pianistic styles in performance he pays a brief visit to the Cape to present an entertaining piano performance in the historic NGK Church, Franschhoek on Saturday 9 august 2008 and at the KAWAI Piano Studios, Muizenberg on the 8th August.
In a presentation titled 'Play, Piano Play!' Duigan performs music by many composers that enjoy popular public appeal as well as seldom performed works in a pianistic bonanza with a contemporary cross cultural slant; music that makes the piano sing, dance and jump! This programme also explores the many roles the piano, probably the world most popular instrument, has played in diverse world cultures and across many musical genres. His performance includes Gershwin's own transcriptions of his popular songs My One and Only and Someone to Watch Over Me, JS Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring arranged Myra Hess, Manuel de Falla's Ritual Fire Dance, Erik Satie's cafe waltz Je te veux, Scott Joplin's popular rag Elite Syncopations, Brazilian tango by Ernesto Nazareth, music by Argentina's Astor Piazzolla and film composers Richard Guiness and Yann Tiersen's music from Amelie. These rub shoulders with brilliant virtuoso concert pieces by Moritz Moskowski, Cecile Chaminade and Frederic Chopin.
In recent years Christopher Duigan has maintained a busy performing schedule with regular appearances on South Africa's premier stages and with leading orchestras. These include performances for the Johannesburg Musical Society, ClassicFm Soirees, National Arts Festival - Grahamstown and solo engagements with the Johannesburg Philharmonic and KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestras. As a freelance pianist and promoter he has built a popular following with audiences over the last ten years with the Franschhoek Music Festivals and Concert Series at the Hilton Arts Festival. Engagements in 2008 include performances in Cape Town and Johannesburg for the Steinway and Sons - South Africa representatives and performances with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra including the recent Concert in the Park in KZN attended by over 6000 people.
