The Franschhoek Valley Conservation Trust has teamed up with Derk Blaisse, leader of the unique Cape Dutch Connection (formerly the Fromagerie Jazz Band), which delights locals and visitors every Friday evening in summer at the newly renamed Vineyard Brasserie, and its new owner, Mark Dendy Young, to plan an exciting series of monthly fund raising dinner events with musical artists from Cape Town opera to Cape Town jazz and anything in between and artists from other genres from satire to magic.

The first in the series is on Wednesday, 20 February 2008 when Hilton Schilder, a leading figure on the Cape Town jazz scene, will play his own very special music.

Hilton Schilder was born into a well-known Cape Town jazz “dynasty”. The son of Tony Schilder, a well-known pianist and bandleader, he grew up in the Lotus River township with the sounds of its music and vibrant life always around him. He was given his first drum at the age of 3. His biographical note on www.music.org.za says his “cultural roots are ever evident in his work. He is intensely aware of his social and political surroundings. He describes himself as a "mind freedom fighter".”
The spectrum of his musical experience includes jazz, carnival, disco and hip-hop groups. Although he plays several instruments, he is happiest with a keyboard in front of him whether it is on a grand piano, synthesizer or computer sequencer.

His first real success was the "goema rock" project, The Genuines, with musical partner Mac McKenzie. They made four albums and toured South Africa, Germany, Holland and Italy. Hilton has since been involved with other groups, taken part in a musical workshop in Denmark and appeared solo in concerts in France. His debut solo album, No Turning Back, was nominated for a SAMA Award as Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

Dinner with Hilton Schilder at the Vineyard Brasserie at 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm sharp (no late admissions) on 20th February costs R250 per person (without wine). For a pre-paid reservation, call 021 876 3420 or email reservations@lapetiteferme.co.za.
